The district, which once elected former Republican leader Tom Delay, was once strongly conservative and Republican but elected Olson by a weak 5 percent in 2018, a year when Democrats ran very strongly in the Texas suburbs due to Beto O’Rourke’s Senate campaign.

Texas’ 22nd district is:

…largely suburban south-central portion of the Greater Houston metropolitan area. The district includes the majority of Fort Bend County, including most of the cities of Sugar Land, Missouri City, Rosenberg, Needville and the county seat of Richmond as well as the county's share of the largely unincorporated Greater Katy area west of Houston. In addition, the district also contains portions of northern Brazoria County, including Pearland and Alvin, as well as a small portion of southeast Harris County centered on Friendswood.

Fort Bend County voted for Hillary Clinton in 2016 and is obviously trending Democratic as it grows.

The district is very diverse and wealthy.

Although Democrats have often been disappointed in their hopes of turning Texas blue, they did unseat two Republican congressmen in 2018, both in urban/suburban districts.

Cook’s Political Ratings currently ranks three Republican held seats in Texas as tossups for 2020 (TX CD-22, TX CD-23, and TX CD-24). Three other Republican districts are no better than “lean Republican” (TX CD-10, TX CD-21, and TX CD-31). Olson’s retirement caused Cook to shift the race from lean Republican to tossup.
