60 percent of Americans now support abortion rights — highest in nearly 25 years

It’s amazing what staring down the barrel of a Handmaid’s Tale-style dystopia can do.

In the wake of some particularly draconian abortion laws recently passed by several mostly Southern states, Americans now strongly support a woman’s right to choose in all or most cases.

The Hill:

Sixty percent of adults say abortion should be legal in all or most cases, according to a Washington Post–ABC News poll. This comes as several states with conservative legislatures have passed laws restricting access to the procedure.

That number of support tops the 55 percent who said abortion should be legal in all or most cases in the same poll in 2013. It is the highest level of support since 1995, when the same percentage of respondents supported the procedure remaining legal.

In other words, if the GOP wanted to galvanize women and progressive men in advance of the 2020 election, it looks like they got their wish.

Even more striking is that only 32 percent of respondents approve of Donald Trump’s handling of the abortion issue, while 54 percent disapprove.

The results of the survey, which was conducted from June 28-July 1, are available here.
