You know, if you go back far enough, most people today probably have ancestors who “owned” slaves. Slavery was rampant in the ancient world, after all.
But with regard to reparations, here’s what’s important: Some people ***cough, cough, white people*** continue to benefit from the institutional racism that followed slavery and continued until ***checks watch*** now.
So this kind of smug trolling from the Old-Age Mutant Fringey Turtle doesn’t help.
McConnell appeared to smile as a reporter asked him during a weekly press conference if he knew that his family once owned slaves, and if it changed his position on reparations for African Americans.“You know, I find myself once again in the same position as President Obama. We both oppose reparations, and we both are the descendants of slaveholders,” McConnell told reporters.NBC News reported Monday that McConnell's great-great-grandfathers, James McConnell and Richard Daley, owned a total of at least 14 slaves in Alabama.
And as The Hill pointed out, yes, technically Obama’s ancestors also owned slaves — a long, long, long time ago. His great-great-great-great-grandfather owned two slaves, as did his great-great-great-great-great-grandmother.
Then again, I’ve watched a lot of episodes of Finding Your Roots, and lots of black people have ancestors who were slaveowners — and who “owned” other members of their family.
But — and this is important — Barack Obama is black, so he didn’t get the free pass that even the dumbest, most venal, and most incompetent white people automatically get from the Mitch McConnells of the world.
So, once again, fuck you, Mitch McConnell. (I really need to reprogram my computer so it automatically renders “fuck you, Mitch McConnell” with a single keystroke. That’s how often I use it.)
