PA-AG: A.G. Josh Shapiro (D) Keeps Up The Fight To Make Criminal Justice Reform A Reality In PA

Received this e-mail today from Attorney General Josh Shapiro’s (D. PA) re-election campaign:

Pennsylvania has the fifth largest incarceration population in the nation — and the highest in the Northeast. These numbers are staggering and unacceptable — and mass incarceration has a disproportionate and shameful impact on poor communities of color.

As Pennsylvania's Attorney General, Josh is working to end this prejudice through a conscious effort toward criminal justice reform. As chairman of Pennsylvania's Justice Reinvestment Initiative (JRI) and as founder of the Pennsylvania Reentry Council, Josh has worked to:

  • Initiate intergovernmental partnerships to reduce recidivism through access to affordable housing, transportation, and education and treatment for health care, addiction, and mental health;
  • Reduce punishments for non-violent criminals;
  • Support substance-abuse treatment for incarcerated persons;
  • And reinvest savings in programs that reduce recidivism — saving over $100 million over the next five years.

We must ensure fairness and objectivity in handling cases involving the use of force by police officers, ensure criminal history is not being used to illegally discriminate, use data to guide decision-making and track progress, and uphold the rights of all Pennsylvanians to a fair defense.
