As We Address The Climate Emergency
Last month, millions of monarch butterflies passed through my hometown of Los Angeles on their annual migration north. Not one will pass through again. The round trip demands the lives of four generations.
Last year, one-millionth of one part of carbon joined 410.999999 others to align as 411 parts per million (ppm). Seven generations since the 280 ppm before the industrial revolution.
Last November, as Paradise, CA melted, a new generation arrived prepared to face what their elders could not—that we are in a climate emergency, and that their lives are at risk. And, that they, unlike butterflies, are not bound by any cycle or season, and can return us to the cycle of the earth whenever they choose.
Today, as we celebrate Earth Day for the forty-ninth time since it began in 1970 at 325 ppm, the climate conversation has reached an inflection point.
Since our founding, Progressive Democrats of America (PDA) has worked in solidarity with climate and environmental justice activists to address global warming. We invite you to join our allies, the Sunrise Movement, at town halls and other climate action events.
PDA’s work with the Bernie Sanders campaign and Bernie Delegates Network led directly to the 2016 Democratic Party Platform’s declaration of a climate emergency and its urgent call for a U.S. led WWII scale climate mobilization—both central ideas of the Green New Deal.
The setback of the 2016 election, the subsequent U.S. withdrawal from the Paris Accord, the Women’s March, the IPCC and NCA reports, the relentless tragic climate breakdown events, and much more have shifted the terms of the conversation.
And so today, on this Earth Day 2019, PDA stands with the Sunrise Movement AOC, The Climate Mobilization, Greta Thunberg, the Climate School Strikes the Extinction Rebellion and climate justice leaders across the country to push us forward in connecting to, and confronting climate truth.
And, we must go further, and faster. The injustice of our extractive economy is causing suffering now. The IPCC report that helped propel our current timeline of 12 years is by its design conservative. The Paris Agreement is a ~ 3 degree Celsius pathway to a 1. 5 degree Celsius goal. And, each percentage of each degree—each day we delay, brings consequences for someone, or something, somewhere in the future.
This Earth Week, PDA focuses in support of our allies across the globe as they rise to face the climate emergency.
Sunrise takes the fight for a Green New Deal on road. There are eight major stops and over 100 town halls planned, the tour is a critical opportunity to teach and to build the grassroots support we need to win a Green New Deal. Please consider joining a climate action event near you.
P.S. We’re here to help you make progress in your state and locality! If you need help organizing a new PDA chapter or energizing your existing chapter, please contact PDA Field Coordinator Dan O’Neal. Join the PDA Phone Team making easy, effective calls from your own home with Mike “Phone Guy” Fox. Also please pitch in $1000, $100, or whatever you can afford to support our organizing.
