Donald Trump Jr. says 200,000 noncitizens on Florida's voter rolls; real number: 85 (in 2012)

Sheesh, Jesus Christ himself didn’t work this hard to please his dad.

Republicans are frantically searching for voter fraud as the races for Florida governor and U.S. Senate continue to tighten, and now Donald Trump Jr., who by all appearances has the EEG reading of rhubarb torte, is entering the fray.

Hey, give him this. While his dad makes accusations without evidence, Jr. has enough integrity to make the same accusations with really shitty evidence.

First, his tweet:

ORDER NOW

x

Jr. has no idea how scarily accurate the first sentence of his tweet is: It’s amazing, but not shocking at all anymore, how consistently obtuse Fredo is.

The little sliver of information he missed this time? Well, the first clue is in the headline. This is a 6-year-old story. The second clue? Well, that smacks you in the face the second you click on the link:

Editor’s note on Nov. 12, 2018: This story was published in May 2012.

The initial list of 180,000 names was whittled to 2,625, according to the Florida Department of State. The state then checked a federal database and stated it found 207 noncitizens on the rolls (not necessarily voting but on the rolls). That list was sent to county election supervisors to check and it also turned out to contain errors. An Aug. 1, 2012, state elections document showed only 85 noncitizens were ultimately removed from the rolls out of a total of about 12 million voters at that time.

The editor’s note and Jr.’s tweet are both dated November 12, so one might be inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he didn’t see the update.

But no such luck.

From The Washington Post:

At some point, the Florida NBC affiliate that wrote the story added the above update verbatim at the very top of the story. It was some point before Trump Jr. shared the article, which we know because the New York Times’s Astead W. Herndon tweeted his approval of the inclusion of an update seven minutes before Trump Jr.'s tweet. In other words, at the time that Trump Jr. tweeted the article, the article itself already debunked the point that Trump Jr. was trying to make.

Whoops. So Trump Jr. asserted that the relevant number was 200,000, but the real number was actually .0425 percent that size.

Like father, like son.

Can’t wait for Donald Trump Jr. to apologize for sharing actual fake news.

No, I literally can’t wait, because it won’t ever happen. He’s a Trump, after all, and being a Trump means never having to say you’re sorry.
