PA-Sen & Gov: New Muhlenberg Poll Shows Casey (D) & Wolf (D) Beating GOPers By Double Digits

Some very good news today out of Pennsylvania courtesy of Muhlenberg University’s latest poll. First, the U.S. Senate race:

In the new poll, Democratic U.S. Sen. Bob Casey maintains the double-digit advantage over those seeking to unseat the two-term legislator.

When those leaning toward a particular candidate are included, Casey drew support from 53 percent of likely voters. Republican U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta was at 35 percent, and 2 percent each for Green Party candidate Neal Gale and Libertarian Dale Kerns Jr.

Casey is far from the president’s most vocal critic among Democrats in the U.S. Senate, but the understated Pennsylvanian has been assertive, particularly on social media, in showing where he disagrees with the president. Casey has steered clear of Trump in his television ads, largely focusing on his legislative record.

Next, the Governor’s race:

The other Democrat at the top of the ticket, Gov. Tom Wolf, also is in a strong electoral position. Wolf had support from 55 percent, with Republican challenger Scott Wagner at 36 percent, Libertarian Ken Krawchuk at 2 percent, and Green Party candidate Paul Glover at 1 percent.

The top issue motivating voters in the governor’s race? The economy and jobs, which was cited by 21 percent, followed by 12 percent saying education and another 12 percent that taxes were at the top of their mind as they vote for governor.

Paul Kemble, 75, and a self-described moderate Republican, says he’s leaning toward voting for Wolf.

“When I read anything about Wagner’s background, I find nothing positive for Pennsylvania in it,” said Kemble, who lives in Forest County. “I think he’s in it for himself.”

Trump posts a dismal 39/55 approval and more than half of the likely voters want Democrats to control Congress. While it looks like Casey and Wolf are locked for re-election, they are taking nothing for granted. They have a big name in Philadelphia now riling up the base:

Barack Obama was turned his political attention Friday to a state that Donald Trump won as the former president campaigned Friday in Philadelphia with two leading Pennsylvania Democrats running for re-election, Gov. Tom Wolf and U.S. Sen. Bob Casey.

The 44th president spoke at the Dell Music Center Friday afternoon before heading to a fundraiser for the senator.

In the Nov. 6 contests, Democrats are trying to oust Republicans in four U.S. House districts and more than a dozen state legislative seats in the Philadelphia area alone. Obama twice carried Pennsylvania in his presidential races, and Democrats hope the state can help them retake control of Congress from the GOP.
