Orrin Hatch: 'Dr. Ford is mixed up' (takes off invisible glasses)

As Laura Clawson noted in her diary earlier this week, Sen. Orrin Hatch has suggested Dr. Christine Blasey Ford is simply “mixed up” when it comes to her accusations against Brett Kavanaugh.

One problem with that:

Actually, there are plenty of problems with that:

  • It’s despicably patronizing.
  • It’s based on the absurd premise that powerful men who appear to be pillars of the community couldn’t possibly be evil or corrupt.
  • It’s more than a little dismissive, considering we’re talking about the lifetime appointment of a man who will make life-and-death decisions affecting women for generations. And if that man has a deep-seated animus toward women, we might want to know that, uh, now.
  • It sends a dangerous message to women who have been sexually assaulted or might be assaulted in the future — that message being, “your perspective and your story are not nearly as important as a man’s, even if that man attempted to rape you.”

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been having lots of Mad Men flashbacks this week. Gee, I wonder if women are getting that same vibe.
