The scientific community agrees that climate change contributes to the frequency and intensity of tropical storms and cyclones. We need to pass the OFF Fossil Fuels for a Better Future Act now to reduce and reverse climate change in the decades ahead.
Also, on September 20, thousands of concerned activists will come together for a National Day of Action commemorating and remembering the 3,000 Americans who died when Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico. The vast majority of those deaths occurred as lengthy power outages and slow emergency response prevented the elderly and the chronically ill from getting life-saving medications and treatments.
These were preventable deaths. We must remember and vow not to let this happen again.
Hawai’i just endured its second tropical storm of the 2018 season. Tropical Storm Olivia made landfall on Maui, and although no deaths were reported, wind and rain caused floods, landslides, power outages, and road closures. Three weeks ago, Hawai’i endured Hurricane Lane, which dumped over 50 inches of rain on some parts of the islands, making it the second wettest tropical storm on U.S. soil.
As you read this email, Hurricane Florence is making landfall along the coast of the Carolinas. Its path remains unpredictable, but life-threatening storm surge, wind, and rain-induced flooding are expected before it dissipates early next week. Three other tropical cyclones are currently churning in the Atlantic, and a disturbance in the Gulf of Mexico may develop into a tropical storm, bringing heavy rainfall to northeastern Mexico, Texas, and Louisiana next week.
Climate change is no longer theoretical. Its effects are real and devastating, demonstrated by monster storms, raging wildfires, extreme draughts, rapid movement of invasive species, melting permafrost, and rising sea levels. Economically and environmentally, we must take action NOW to reduce carbon and methane emissions drastically, or future generations will face uninhabitable conditions around the country and the world.
Rep. Tulsi Gabbard authored and introduced the OFF Fossil Fuels for a Better Future Act. It currently has 44 co-sponsors. Ask your Representative to become a co-sponsor today. Reducing emissions now is the only way to prevent ruinous climate-related catastrophes in the future.
