Two More Top Ranking State Department Officials Step Down On Trump’s Watch

Donald Trump’s administration has been marked by one resignation after another. As of last week, two more top ranking State Department officials have announced that they are stepping down. The lead envoy to the U.N. and the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs

The Hill reports:

Tracey Ann Jacobson, a career foreign service officer responsible for overseeing U.S. policy at international organizations including the U.N., told her staff on Friday that she will continue in her post until early October but did not specify why she was leaving, a U.S. official told Foreign Policy…

…Also on Friday, William Rivington Brownfield, the U.S. Assistance Secretary of State of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, told his department that he would leave by the end of September, according to the report.

Brownfield’s wife, Kristie Kenney, one of the most senior foreign service officers in the State Department, had announced her resignation four months earlier.

After Trump took office in January, the State Department saw a mass exodus, including the entire senior level of management. According to David Wade, who served as State Department chief of staff under Secretary of State John Kerry, this was “the single biggest simultaneous departure of institutional memory that anyone can remember.” State Department officials have been running for the hills ever since.

Neither Jacobson nor Brownfield gave a reason for their decisions to step down, but they are joining a very long list of others from the department who have resigned during Trump’s short seven-month stint in the White House. It’s hard to blame them. Despite the fact that Trump’s administration has slashed the department’s budget by as much as 37 percent, working under him in any capacity is a long way from what they signed up for.
