Twitter and Political Beef Over Embassy Attacks

Don’t you love how we’ve advanced as a people? 160 characters are able to shake the bones and communicate effectively to this extremely world. At any given moment one is able to know what a political official is thinking, something unlike we’ve ever imagined.

Recently, Twitter has popped up a lot in political news, especially regarding the domestic and international reactions to the anti-Muslim video.

  • One staffer at the Cairo embassy sent out tweets after the State Department directions were to not issue any statements regarding the issue causing the Romney team to send out an early reaction.
  • Senator Marco Rubio made the smarter move and criticized the attack and situation, rather than the President. Perhaps he is in a different position as a non-candidate but nonetheless a smarter response.
  • 2008 Presidential candidate, Romney surrogate and ne0-con Senator John McCain tweeted, “Just watched an excellent and moving statement by Sec. Clinton- just the right message and tone.”
  • Two time secretary of Defense, most recently under Bush 43, supported Romney and said “The attacks on our embassies & diplomats are a result of perceived American weakness. Mitt Romney is right to point that out.”
  • Twitter handle @Ikhwanweb is the Muslim Brotherhood’s official English site. Initially it called for nationwide protests, only to recant and state: “will be present only in #Tahrir, for symbolic protest against the movie.” The Freedom and Justice Party, or the Muslim Brotherhood shorthand, is already under the West’s suspicions for their conservative platform, history and uncertainty on the Egypt-Israeli peace treaty maintained under former President Mubarak. Their official statement called for peaceful protest and for demonstrators to “show restraint.”

If the Arab world wants to be taken seriously and not as barbarians, they must show restraint and respect the freedom of speech, art and expression. Those who disagree with such barbaric acts should condemn them and not allow the hooligans to represent the Islam faith. Perhaps the video is minor and is actually a catalyst to overall post-Arab Spring frustration and anti-American sentiments in the region. Such moments are breeding ground for the radical groups to recruit.

Talks of deductions or a stop on foreign aid to certain countries have arose in the media and Congress but 90% in the media have failed to ask 1) What’s the constitutionality of foreign aid, 2) America, near bankrupt, can’t afford to give foreign aid, and 3) if Republicans pose to be again domestic welfare, why support foreign welfare.

Over 8 countries have experienced violent or near-violent demonstrations. 4 Americans have been killed, most notably ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens. Many in the media have called this murder an “act of war,” maybe stirring up an introduction to something larger in the near future. Hopefully not. Whatever it may be, every human being has a right to demonstrate, protest, civil disobedience, etc.–in fact, it is ones duty–but no one has to kill another being over any form of media.
