Trump Wants To Cancel Contract To Build Air Force One Because Boeing Wants Too Much Money (VIDEO)

Donald Trump has decided that the contract to build Air Force One should be canceled immediately because the price tag is just too high. In contrast, making New York City spend $1 million a day to protect his family that won’t move into the White House is fine. But I digress.

Trump tweeted on Tuesday morning that he wants to trash the contract with Boeing because they want too much money to build the plane.

On Tuesday morning, Trump further explained his tweet when speaking to reporters at Trump Tower.

The plane is totally out of control. It’s going to be over $4 billion for Air Force One program, and I think it’s ridiculous. I think Boeing is doing a little bit of a number. We want Boeing to make a lot of money, but not that much money.

Trump spokesman Jason Miller told reporters in a phone call that this is just the beginning. He said that Trump plans to look at the Pentagon’s budget and find other places to make cuts as well.

“I think this really speaks to the president-elect’s focus on keeping costs down across the board with regard to government spending,” he said. “I think people are really frustrated with some of the big price tags that are coming out for programs, even in addition to this one. So we’re going to look for areas where we can keep costs down and look for ways where we can save money.”

Loren Thompson, a defense consultant, explained that “Air Force One has unique communications, safety and self-protection features so that the president can function under the most trying circumstances — like nuclear war.” The high cost, he said, “is driven by the demands of the mission.”

Todd Harrison, a defense analyst with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, said the cost is expected to reach $4 billion, but there is a reason for the price tag, he pointed out.

“I think once [Trump] sees an actual Air Force One and the unique capabilities it is outfitted with he may start to understand why it is so expensive to replace,” Harrison said. He added that Air Force One isn’t just a symbol of presidential power, but also serves as a “flying command post.”

“In the event of a nuclear attack, this is where the military will keep the president safe,” Harrison noted.
