A Top Education Official Just Resigned With A Dire Warning To The American People

The Trump administration is a hulking and tangled mass of corruption, incompetence, and wrongdoing from which people of principle are beginning to extricate themselves. Today, it was revealed that Trump’s Education Department has hemorrhaged one of its senior officials.

James Runcie, Chief Operating Officer of the Office of Federal Student Aid, has tendered his resignation in protest of Betsy DeVos.

The widely disliked Secretary of Education ordered Runcie to testify in front of the House Oversight Committee. She wanted him on record discussing the costs of improper student aid. Runcie was concerned about being used as a prop in the forwarding of the toxic Trump education agenda. Rather than compromise his beliefs, he decided his only morally defensible move was to resign.

Runcie was responsible for the arm of the department that administers the federal government’s $1 trillion student loan programs. He was appointed by President Obama and his departure comes as a surprise.

“I cannot in good conscience continue to be accountable as Chief Operating Officer given the risk associated with the current environment at the Department,” said Runcie in his resignation memo . He clearly dislikes the direction that DeVos’s unqualified leadership is steering the department. He criticized her for “diverting critical resources” from his office. DeVos has a long history of criticizing public education, so it makes sense that department officials dedicated to improving such education would find her leadership intolerable.

DeVos herself is slated to testify today in defense of Trump’s abominable budget, which will remove $143 billion of funding from the Department of Education. Republicans have long sought to destroy public education in order to punt responsibility to private and charter institutions. DeVos is Trump’s willing hatchetwoman, his billionare virus working to kill the Department of Education from the inside.
