Texas Is Openly Working To Violate The Constitution In A TRULY Horrible Way – It Will HURT Children

Many so-called religious freedom bills are designed to give Christians the ability to discriminate against anybody they deem to be sinners under the guise of staying true to their faith. Many of those bills apply to private organizations, but some have gone farther. Too much farther.

Consider the clusterfuck that is Texas. that would allow state-funded adoption agencies to discriminate against certain couples looking to adopt children for the following reasons:

“Parents seeking to adopt children in Texas could soon be rejected by state-funded or private agencies with religious objections to them being Jewish, Muslim, gay, single, or interfaith couples, under a proposal in the Republican-controlled Legislature…Republican sponsors of Texas’ bill say it is designed to support the religious freedom of adoption agencies and foster care providers. Many of the agencies are private and faith-based but receive state funds.”

In short, this means the state wants to use taxpayer dollars to prohibit qualified people from adopting or fostering children who desperately need good parents because they’re “wrong” for not adhering to someone’s personal values.

But far worse than that is the fact that the state is putting religious objections above the welfare of children, as well as possibly forcing children in the system to conform to a certain set of ideals. For example:

“Not only could agencies turn away hopeful parents under the religious freedom provision, but they could require children in the foster care system to comply with their faith-based requirements…

…That means child welfare organizations could send LGBT kids to conversion therapy, a treatment designed to turn people straight — which the Pan American Health Organization calls a ‘serious threat to the health and well-being of affected people.’ And they could deny young people contraception and abortions.”

Since this bill does not single out Christianity as the protected religion, they probably think they’re skirting a violation of the Establishment Clause of the 1st Amendment, as well as the Equal Protection Clause of the 14th Amendment. But it’s so patently transparent that they mean Christianity when they create these bills that it’s almost absurd.

These bills are a double-edged sword. The instant someone who isn’t Christian (say, a Muslim), objects to something on religious grounds under these laws, there will be serious outcry from the religious right. Other religions are not equal to them in their eyes. It’s high time right-wing Christians learn that they can’t rule the country like this.
