Ten Commandments Monument Destroyed Less Than A Day After It Goes Up On Arkansas Capitol Grounds (IMAGES/VIDEO)

In America, we are supposed to have separation of church and state. Therefore it should come as no surprise that the idea of putting a six-foot tall monument of the Ten Commandments on the Arkansas Capitol grounds would be highly controversial. However, when the monument that had been two years in the making was finally installed on Tuesday, no one could have guessed that this would be the only day it would remain in place.

In the early hours of Wednesday morning, a local man drove his car into the monument, completely destroying it. Here are a few images and videos, taken via Twitter, that document the damage:

A spokesman with the Secretary of State’s office admitted to the contentious nature of the decision to put the monument up, saying:

We had some concerns, just because this was such a highly charged issue with some people.”

Now, of course, vandalism is NEVER okay. This is not the way this should have been handled. However, in this country, we do not have our government bodies explicitly endorsing one religion over all others. Right-wing Christians have long been on a tear, insisting that they get to display their religious symbols in public, start public proceedings with Christian prayers, even sneaking their beliefs into the classroom. They constantly use their beliefs as a weapon against those who don’t live exactly as they say. In short, it’s no surprise that someone who was sick of their unconstitutional fuckery would finally snap and make a dramatic point like this.

Again, we do not condone political vandalism or violence, but is anyone really shocked by this at this point?

The man responsible has reportedly been arrested, and local police are investigating.
