If President Obama really hated police officers these statistics would be sky high.
Conservatives have worked hard in an effort to portray President Obama as a cop hater who wants them all dead. Ever since five Dallas police officers were shot and killed by a lone gunman, Republicans have swarmed social media, the radio, and televised news programs proclaiming that President Obama is to blame for the violence against police officers. And if you ask them, they’ll do everything they can to make you believe that cops have been murdered at an unprecedented level since he took office.
The only problem is that they are flat WRONG!
As it turns out, the intentional murder of police officers is a tracked statistic that has been tallied for decades, and as much as conservatives think cops are unsafe under President Obama, police were almost twice as likely to get killed during President Reagan’s tenure in the White House.
According to the Chicago Tribune,
Data from the Officers Down Memorial Page, which tracks law enforcement officer fatalities in real time, illustrates the point. During the Reagan years, for instance, an average of 101 police officers were intentionally killed each year. Under George H.W. Bush that number fell to 90. It fell further, to 81 deaths per year, under Clinton, and to 72 deaths per year under George W. Bush.
Under Obama, the average number of police intentionally killed each year has fallen to its lowest level yet — an average of 62 deaths annually through 2015. If you include the 2016 police officer shootings year-to-date and project it out to a full year, that average of 62 deaths doesn’t change.
As the Tribune goes on to point out, “year-to-date officer fatalities via shooting” are up but only because the numbers rose due to the five officers who were killed in Dallas. Prior to that tragedy, the numbers would show only a 17 percent increase from year to year. However, the numbers are expected to hold at around the same as 2015 at the end of the year.
In short, police officers are safer now with President Obama as the commander-in-chief than they ever were under the previous four presidents.
That means conservatives owe President Obama a huge PUBLIC apology for blaming him for the deaths of police officers. Because you know that if Democrats has blamed Reagan for the murder of cops back in the 1980s Republicans would have accused them of treason and being unpatriotic.
These are the actual facts, conservatives, and if you really care about the safety of police officers you will stop whining about President Obama and start helping him make police even safer by enacting gun control laws that will keep guns out of the hands of people like the killer of those five officers in Dallas.
As John Adams once said, “Facts are stubborn things; and whatever may be our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passion, they cannot alter the state of facts and evidence.”
