Senate Shuts Down Press Access With New Rule As GOP Prepares To Pass Secret Healthcare Bill

Early Tuesday morning, reporters on Capitol Hill began tweeting some disturbing news. They have been informed that they will no longer be allowed access to senators in the hallways of the Capitol Building, where they have been conducting interviews for years:

Some expressed surprise, even from Republican Senators on the actual Rules Committee that barred reporters:

But most of the chatter included speculation that it may have something to do with the healthcare bill the Senate GOP wants to pass without ever showing it to the public. After House Republicans passed their version of Trumpcare, it appeared so politically toxic that conservatives in the Senate immediately distanced themselves from it, calling it a non-starter. They vowed to get a scoring on the bill from the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, but that is literally all they did — they refused to release the content of the bill itself. Zero transparency.
