SC GOP Wants To Block Adult Content On YOUR Laptop And Make You PAY To Remove The Block

Republicans just LOVE controlling the lives of others. If you do anything in your personal life that they don’t like, they’re sure to come up with a law to somehow make it illegal – or at least more difficult – to continue doing. This is the reason for their constant crusading against women’s reproductive rights, LGBTQ rights, alternative religion, and everything else that doesn’t line up with their very narrow and ignorant world view. Case in point – the South Carolina Republican Party’s vow to .

The bill, introduced by SC State Rep. William Chumley, would force internet providers and computer manufacturers to block any and all adult content. The only way South Carolinians would be able to view said material would be if they were to pay $20 a pop to have each individual device unlocked. Chumley says of his proposed law that it will help raise money to combat the problem of human trafficking:

This is a way to preserve freedom, not to raise taxes and combat a serious problem all in one.”

Further, Chumley openly admits that it will shine a much-needed spotlight on the GOP’s continuing crusade against porn:

Pornography, with its harmful effects, especially on children, has become a public health crisis that is destroying the lives of millions. We urge energetic prosecution of child pornography, which is closely linked to human trafficking.”

For one thing, this isn’t liberty. It’s the opposite of liberty and freedom. Nobody should have to pay to view certain content on their own personal devices. This can’t possibly be constitutional. If nothing else, it’s a complete violation of the First Amendment’s free speech protections. Secondly, who decides what is and isn’t appropriate material to be viewed without paying? After all, schools around the nation have run into this issue. While trying to block porn from school computers, the software used also blocks LGBTQ websites, websites for women’s health, and other truly educational material. All it would take is for a search keyword to trigger the software to shut a person’s personal computer down.

This is outrageous. Sure, the GOP loves small government – small enough to fit into our very bedrooms. Then again, we already knew that.
