Rick Santorum Just Proved GOP Doesn’t Give A F*** About People With Pre-Existing Conditions

Health insurers hate insuring people with pre-existing conditions because they need ongoing care that’s usually pretty expensive. So the insurers used to deny coverage to the people who most need affordable insurance so they can keep lining their pockets with the premiums of those who don’t need much care (if any). Rick Santorum thinks we should go back to allowing that, but his reasoning is sicker than flat-out saying he’s putting profits above people.

Basically, he’s one of those Republicans who believes we have to eliminate 100 percent of all fraud, waste and abuse for everything, and to make his point, he stretches things so out of proportion that they become lies. According to Santorum, this is the problem with people who have pre-existing conditions:

“Pre-existing conditions, though it’s very popular. What the reality is today that thousands, maybe approaching millions of Americans, are paying nine months for insurance. Why? Because you pay for your insurance for nine months, there’s a provision in Obamacare that says you can’t be thrown off your plan for three months.

So, you stop paying in September until the end of the year, You have a right to guaranteed [coverage for] preexisting conditions. You can buy a new plan in January. So people are paying nine months for 12 months of care. And it’s happening more and more and more as people get the gig.”

Yes, the whole problem is that people with pre-existing conditions scam the insurers, which wrongly strips them of much-needed profits. He has no evidence for that, though, and like every other claim Republicans make about fraud (welfare fraud, Social Security fraud, voter fraud, fraud fraud fraud), there is no evidence of this.

The word “fraud” is a rallying cry and an excuse that Republicans use to justify gutting, and even destroying, much needed programs and throwing the poor and working class to the wolves. Santorum is no different. Watch him spew this word-vomit below:
