President Obama Schools Republicans On Their Disgusting Healthcare Bill: ‘Fundamental Meanness’

Donald Trump has set the bar so low for being even something resembling a decent president that Barack Obama retroactively deserves at least 7 more Nobel Prizes. Unfortunately, his tenure has passed, but he does still sometimes weigh in on what’s happening since he’s been gone. And the biggest issue right now is the GOP’s single-minded effort to undo his signature achievement, the .

On Thursday afternoon, in his first Facebook post since before he left office, President Obama appealed to Senate Republicans who may be wavering on the Trumpcare bill the same day. And since four Republican senators are already on record saying they can’t support the bill without more negotiations, and , Obama’s words may just have some impact:

The highlights:

I hope that our Senators…consider that the rationale for action, on health care or any other issue, must be something more than simply undoing something that Democrats did.

[I]f Republicans could put together a plan that is demonstrably better than the improvements we made to our health care system, that covers as many people at less cost, I would gladly and publicly support it.

I still hope that there are enough Republicans in Congress who remember that public service is not about sport or notching a political win.

[T]he legislation…would raise costs, reduce coverage, roll back protections, and ruin Medicaid as we know it.

And small tweaks over the course of the next couple weeks…cannot change the fundamental meanness at the core of this legislation.”

And the kicker:

It’s a massive transfer of wealth from middle-class and poor families to the richest people in America. It hands enormous tax cuts to the rich and to the drug and insurance industries, paid for by cutting health care for everybody else. Those with private insurance will experience higher premiums and higher deductibles, with lower tax credits to help working families cover the costs, even as their plans might no longer cover pregnancy, mental health care, or expensive prescriptions. Discrimination based on pre-existing conditions could become the norm again. Millions of families will lose coverage entirely.”

President Obama is exactly right. By cutting funding for programs for the poorest, oldest, and sickest among us, the GOP has crafted a bill that delivers a massive tax cut to the extremely wealthy. Let’s hope the Republicans who are on the fence about this bill kill it — before it has a chance to start killing Americans.
