While I am still determining which Democratic candidate is the best choice to defeat Tea Party Senator Pat Toomey (R. PA) (and Braddock Mayor John Fetterman's (D. PA) entrance makes the race even more interesting), Katie McGinty (D. PA) is calling out Toomey on this:
Pat Toomey is once again putting extreme partisan politics ahead of Pennsylvania families. This time, he walked away from his support for expanded background checks for firearm purchases.
Why? So he could avoid having a protest at a campaign event. That’s right – Toomey has backed away from commonsense gun safety measures to protect his re-election campaign.
That’s not the leadership Pennsylvania deserves. Add your name today and tell Pat Toomey to put safety first and support expanded background checks for firearm sales.
Every day in America, an average of 89 people die as a result of gun violence. In 2012 alone, there were 1,453 gun deaths in Pennsylvania. Pennsylvanians have a right to be protected from gun violence, and they have the right to expect their elected officials to do what it takes to keep them safe. By bowing to extreme partisans, Senator Toomey is putting us all at risk.
A staggering 95% of Pennsylvanians agree there should be universal background checks for firearm purchases. But Pat Toomey is watching out for his well-funded special interests allies. After all, in 2010, the National Rifle Association spent more than $1.3 million to ensure a Toomey victory and maintain the status quo.
Stand up today in support of expanded background checks. Tell Pat Toomey to put Pennsylvania first.
Katie is working hard to hold Toomey accountable for his failure to lead for Pennsylvania families. Together, we’ll fight to pass important legislation like universal background checks for firearm purchases. The only way we can make meaningful changes in Washington is to stand together and demand action right now.
Thanks for standing with us,
