One Spanish Flu Over The Cuckoo's Nest

It's okay, Politicus. We know you were updating your site, and our most recent blog entry probably got lost in the shuffle. Originally, this blog was intended to be published back on Friday, September 28th. As you read on, that will become very apparent.

It’s Friday September 28th! Do you know where your podcast is? On this day in history back in 1918, a deadly outbreak of influenza hit the city of Philadelphia following the Liberty Loan parade. Because of earlier reports (whether accurate or inaccurate) that the disease had desolated people in Spain, it became known as The Spanish Flu. The pandemic lasted nearly two years and killed upwards of 50 million people (approximately 3% of the world’s population at the time). Nobody knows for sure, but its source is believed to have come from a precursor virus that lived in wild waterfowl. Talk about Angry Birds! This strain of the flu virus was especially devastating because of its unique ability to destroy the healthier immune systems of younger, stronger victims. Although WWI wasn’t the cause of the pandemic, it certainly helped to spread it. We all know our enduring tension with the Soviet Union was called The Cold War. Perhaps a better name for WWI would have been The Flu War. We hope our puns don’t make you “sick”. Hopefully, you realize they’re nothing to “sneeze” at. Regardless of whether or not they make you laugh, it was worth a “shot”. In nature, we love to pretend we’re at the top of the food chain. Guess what. We’re not. Viruses (such as The Spanish Flu), bacteria (such as The Bubonic Plague), protozoa, fungi, and the ever-increasing numbers of mutant monsters (see Carbapenem-Resistant Klebsiella Pneumoniae) our Dr. Frankensociety has created continue to feast on us. The consequences of our insatiable desire to convert the living into the dead (aka the production of goods and services) without regard for the welfare of humans, nonhumans, and the planet will continue to compound our problems and decrease our chances for long-term survival. The very things we need to ensure we have a fighting chance in the days ahead (e.g. forests, oceans, etc.) are the very things we callously destroy. Everyday around the world, humans force hundreds of species into extinction. Why would any sane person willingly participate in the efforts that guarantee their own demise? The only explanation that makes a shred of sense is that we’re insane, and we want to die. Mother Earth, however, wants to live. Unfortunately for her, she’s got a bad case of the humans. Perhaps this explains why she’s working so hard to get rid of us. Can’t say that we blame her. She knows the only way she’s going to get better is to completely purge us from her system. Take two highly contagious incurable airborne pathogens, wash it down with a worldwide drought and famine, and call us in the morning…but download us tonight! That’s right! Our latest episode is highly toxic, extremely dangerous, and completely available. Give us a listen now, or at least before a lethal ear infection blocks your hearing.
