Major Advertising Company Just Barred Breitbart News For Hate Speech

One of the biggest digital advertising services just barred Breitbart News from using its ad network, pointing to the online magazine’s ‘hate speech.’ The website headed by the president-elect’s chief strategist just lost business because of AppNexus’s policies. After Donald Trump picked Steve Bannon, former executive chairman of Breitbart, as his White House Chief strategist just last week, AppNexus took a look at the far-right wing website.

This has nothing to do with Google banning their ads from being placed on fake news sites. It’s about inciting violence:

The digital ad firm decided the publication had breached a policy against content that incites violence, said AppNexus spokesman Joshua Zeitz.

“We did a human audit of Breitbart and determined there were enough articles and headlines that cross that line, using either coded or overt language,” Zeitz said.

Breitbart News Network Chief Executive Officer Larry Solov insisted that Breitbart “has always and continues to condemn racism and bigotry in any form.”

We’re not sure if this has anything to do with the ad network’s decision or not but Bannon said in August that Breitbart is “home of the Alt-Right.” The term ‘Alt-Right’ is used to normalize Nazis in America. And recently, a video of Trump’s Nazi supporters has come to light in the news. Hundreds gathered at the venue not far from the White House. The crowd began chanting ‘Heil Trump!’ while giving Nazi salutes.

“Breitbart News Network continues to experience exceptional growth having attracted over 45 million unique visitors in the last thirty days alone,” Solov added. “We have built an engaged community of loyal readers who are also a powerful consumer group.”

But without AppNexus, the ‘Alt-Right’ site will surely see a decrease in revenue.

AppNexus, backed by large companies like Microsoft Corp., News Corp. and WPP Plc, is an important source of ad dollars for many online publications. The company was second to Google in the automated ad serving market for publishers, earning $2.1 billion in revenue in 2014, and paying $1.9 billion of that to publishers, Cowen & Co. has estimated. AppNexus executive Jonathan Hsu said in February the company handles about $2.5 billion in ad spending. Some of that went to Breitbart.com until now, Zeitz said.

In one of Breitbart’s “articles,” it refers to Bill Kristol as a “Renegade Jew.” Another one is titled, ‘The solution to online “harassment’ is simple: Women should log off.” “Gay rights have made us dumber,” Breitbart has also ‘reported’.

Twitter recently banned Breitbart’s technology editor Milo Yiannopoulos who led an online campaign of racial and sexual harassment against Leslie Jones, who appeared in Ghostbusters.

To put this in perspective, the president-elect’s chief strategist just lost a lot of revenue because of hate speech. Prepare for the hoards of Breitbart readers to complain that their favorite hate-site has been victimized.
