Lawmaker Abruptly Calls For Sessions Resignation Over Confirmed Perjury To Senate Committee

A California lawmaker better known for his penchant for trolling Donald Trump on Twitter sat for an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on Friday, and the two discussed the ongoing investigation into how, when, and to what degree the Trump campaign colluded with the Russian government to influence the 2016 election.

Since the fact that the campaign did accept Russian offers of assistance is now established fact, the conversation gets much easier when it comes to what should happen to those involved. Although Trump and his associates still deny everything from top to bottom, preferring instead to deflect and try to illegally influence the Justice Department to pursue political enemies, and although Trump-friendly Republicans have now attempted multiple times to force Robert Mueller to stop investigating entirely, there is simply too much evidence for Team Trump to duck at this point.

One of the biggest surprises of the investigation has turned out to be how deftly and completely Attorney General Jeff Sessions has perjured himself at every turn. Whether it was dodging questions he had previously agreed to answer, or hedging what answers he did give to investigators, Sessions’ testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee — on which he once sat — was a crash course in how to cover your ass like a long-practiced champion.

Most famously, however, Sessions testified that he “was not aware” of any Trump campaign official talking with Russians before the election. That has now been proven entirely false through the testimony of both George Papadopoulos, the former adviser dismissed by Trump as a “coffee boy,” and of Carter Page, Papadopoulos’ fellow foreign policy adviser to the campaign. Both men testified that they personally told Sessions about contact with Russian officials.

When Wolf sat down with Democrat Ted Lieu, he may not have expected to get as candid or forthcoming an answer as what Lieu offered. When asked if Sessions perjured himself, Lieu didn’t hesitate:

Absolutely. He lied under oath at least twice and most recently, both Carter Page and George Papadopoulos, based on their testimony and their statements, they show that Jeff Sessions contradicted himself when he said he was not aware of any campaign official talking to the Russians.”

Blitzer then asked the Representative, “So I assume you want Sessions to resign?”

He committed perjury. He should not be in that position.”

Rep. Ted Lieu is once again speaking for every American — it is time for not only Jeff Sessions to resign, but for EVERY official who is discovered to have lied during this process to be stripped of their jobs and prosecuted as appropriate.
