GOP Lawmaker Admits Last Minute Tax Provision Was Added To Get Bill Passed (VIDEO)

Senator John Cornyn, the Majority Whip — or vote-wrangler — of the upper chamber of Congress, made a stunning admission on Monday while speaking to ABC News’ This Week. The senior lawmaker from Texas admitted that a last-minute provision that would personally benefit Donald Trump and many of the millionaires in Congress was added to sweeten the deal and “cobble together” enough votes to pass the bill.

Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee, a Republican who made waves in October when he referred to the Trump White House as an “adult daycare center,” actually changed his vote from a “no” to a “yes” after the provision was added, despite insisting that he was not aware of the provision — which would benefit him tremendously — before changing his vote. In fact, Corker claims he had not even read the bill, which I’m pretty sure he doesn’t understand is actually worse.

Though slightly more complicated than space here will allow for a complete explanation of, the new deduction would allow owners of “income-producing” land to be taxed at a “pass-through” rate, like an LLC or a sole proprietorship. Owners can take a 20 percent deduction for such properties. It would allow Trump and many Republican leaders to avoid paying tens of millions of dollars that would otherwise be collected and used for the Commons of the United States — they get out of paying for the military, education, healthcare, and even disaster relief that the rest of Americans must now shoulder the burden of.

ABC Host George Stephanopoulos asked Cornyn why the provision was added so late in the process, as it wasn’t included until Friday, when Republicans were still worried about getting the votes they needed. Cornyn replied that getting votes was precisely the reason the deficit-ballooning break was built in:

Well, we were working very hard. It was a very intense process … And what we’ve tried to do is cobble together the votes we needed to get this bill passed.”

When challenged by the host to respond to allegations that the new provision was how the GOP got Senator Corker to change his vote, he demurred and changed the subject.

It’s amazing to me that Senator Cornyn found the time to participate in debate on Friday, let alone Whip extra votes, since he was so busy that day attempting to troll former Attorney General Eric Holder on Twitter. Holder was tweeting about the widely-circulated rumor that Donald Trump would attempt to remove Robert Mueller from the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election:

Thinking he was clever — and exhibiting the insular train of thought that makes Republicans believe their ideas are popular — Cornyn responded:

It seems that John Cornyn has learned to lie, deflect, and deny with even the most legendary of Republican lawmakers.
