Former FBI Official Tells NBC News One Of The Things We All Suspect About James Comey’s Firing

With FBI Director James Comey’s firing comes a million questions, but there are only a few that are probably on everyone’s mind. Did Trump fire Comey because he was mad that Comey wouldn’t lie under oath for him? Did Trump fire him because he felt Comey was focusing on his administration instead of continuing to investigate Hillary? And, did Trump do this because he wants the probe closed and Comey refused to do it?

That last one is where this former FBI official comes in. Ken Dilanian, a reporter for NBC News’ Investigative Unit, tweeted this out not too long after the news of Comey’s firing broke:

Trump has taken to Twitter to yell about his total innocence repeatedly, even changing his banner photo on Twitter to include a tweet falsely claiming that James Clapper said there was no evidence of collusion between him or his team, and Russia. (He took that down in fairly short order, probably because the whole of Twitter piled on him for it.)

But then we have this to consider: Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein told Trump to fire Comey because of his handling of the investigation into Hillary and her emails. It’s clear that that’s where at least some in this administration believe the FBI’s focus ought to be, if it ought to be on the 2016 election:

Furthermore, Trump himself has tweeted repeatedly that he thinks the government should be investigating Hillary, the DNC, and their ties to Russia while claiming the whole investigation into his administration is a hoax:

Besides that, his letter to Comey was very revealing:

“While I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation, I nevertheless concur with the Department of Justice that you are not able to effectively lead the Bureau.”

Here’s a report alluding to the possibility that Trump fired Comey to end the Russia probe:

That suggests Trump feels Comey was focusing on him regardless of what he said. And now he can appoint a director who’ll close the Russia probe, and maybe even reopen investigations into Hillary to take the focus off of him and paint his enemies as more criminal and treasonous than he is.
