DOJ Finally Responds To Inquiry About Claims Obama Wiretapped, And Trump Is Going To Be Furious

It seems like a lifetime ago, but that’s only because we’re currently suffering through  Way back in March, you may remember, Donald Trump accused Barack Obama of having wiretapped his phones in Trump Tower before the 2016 election. He was pretty adamant about it, in fact, tweeting four times in just half an hour:

The claim was asinine, but he was so convinced that pro-transparency group American Oversight decided to file a lawsuit with a Freedom of Information Act request for any records of or pertaining to wiretaps at Trump Tower. In a statement, AO said:

Given that the president publicly confirmed the wiretaps (in his March tweets) and former FBI Director Comey publicly denied their existence (in his testimony to Congress), we have argued that FBI and DOJ ought to be able to provide a straight answer about whether any wiretap records do or don’t exist.”

So on Friday, the Department of Justice came through with the request, and boy does it not say what Trump was hoping it would say. Speaking for both the FBI and the National Security Division, the DOJ’s memo notes there is no proof, saying “both FBI and NSD confirm that they have no records related to wiretaps as described.”

Sorry, big guy, but it’s time to break out the big guns:
