Ambassador Chris Stevens’ Family Slams GOP For Blaming Hillary Clinton For Benghazi

Republicans have been obsessively investigating the Benghazi terrorist attack for over four years now in an effort to hurt President Obama and especially Hillary Clinton, but the family of the ambassador who died in the attack just delivered a swift kick to the balls of every Republican by declaring that Clinton isn’t to blame for the attack.

Dr. Anne Stevens is the sister of slain Ambassador Christopher Stevens, who perished along with three other Americans in a terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya in September 2012.

In an interview with the New Yorker, the Seattle Children’s Hospital chief of pediatric rheumatology spoke on behalf of her family and made it clear that Hillary Clinton is not to blame for Stevens’ death nor does her family blame her for it. In fact, Stevens suggested that Congress is the “underlying cause” of why there was a lack of adequate security around the consulate in the first place.

It is clear, in hindsight, that the facility was not sufficiently protected by the State Department and the Defense Department. But what was the underlying cause? Perhaps if Congress had provided a budget to increase security for all missions around the world, then some of the requests for more security in Libya would have been granted. Certainly the State Department is underbudgeted.

I do not blame Hillary Clinton or [former CIA Director] Leon Panetta. They were balancing security efforts at embassies and missions around the world. And their staffs were doing their best to provide what they could with the resources they had. The Benghazi Mission was understaffed. We know that now. But, again, Chris knew that. It wasn’t a secret to him. He decided to take the risk to go there. It is not something they did to him. It is something he took on himself.

Stevens went on to praise Hillary Clinton’s response to the attacks and she changes she made to try and prevent future ones. She also stated that it’s unfair to criticize Clinton and that it should stop.

She has taken full responsibility, being head of the State Department, for what occurred. She took measures to respond to the review board’s recommendations. She established programs for a better security system. But it is never going to be perfect. Part of being a diplomat is being out in the community. We all recognize that there’s a risk in serving in a dangerous environment. Chris thought that was very important, and he probably would have done it again. I don’t see any usefulness in continuing to criticize her. It is very unjust.

Indeed, Republicans have been using their political witch hunt to attack Hillary Clinton relentlessly because they want to sabotage her presidential campaign. But even the newest official report hasn’t shined any new light on the attack and Republicans clearly have no evidence that Clinton is culpable. A pair of Tea Party conservative lawmakers have released their own report outright blaming Clinton for Stevens’ death, calling her actions “morally reprehensible.” Clearly, they are using the deaths of four Americans for some kind of political gain.

Republicans wasted $7 million in taxpayer money trying to persecute Hillary Clinton and their investigation of Benghazi dragged on longer than Congressional investigation into the 9/11 attacks. All in an effort to smear President Obama and Hillary Clinton. And in the end, they found zilch and Stevens’ own family does not blame Clinton at all because they believe the Republican-controlled Congress is more complicit because they slashed security funding for U.S. embassies and diplomatic personnel for years prior to the attack in Benghazi. But you won’t hear about that in the report put together by Republicans.
