President Obama’s Winning Work Continues

November 8, 2012 by Maureen Andrade

I haven’t written anything more than an email for a couple days, spent as my writer’s mind is from Campaign 2012. In addition to posting here, I was a regional digital lead for Organizing for America. For many months, I gave my best energy to the cause of reelecting President Obama- and it was worth it. I know all volunteers and staff feel it was worth it following our big electoral win. We are the champions, the victors, the big winners. But what does it all mean, anyway?

What this means is the winning work of the Obama Administration and the Democratic Party continues for four more years.

The first major effort of President Obama’s Administration was the Affordable Care Act, which will be fully realized in 2014. Health care reforms will continue to come online, helping save millions of people’s lives and financial futures. It is an inalienable human right to receive health care, and our nation is closer than ever to achieving full coverage.     Read more

Something to Believe In: Planned Parenthood

September 12, 2012 by Maureen Andrade

Volunteers at Planned Parenthood, Vancouver, WA

Walking into the new Planned Parenthood facility in Vancouver, WA one is greeted by friendly people and an immaculate environment. Like any kind of medical clinic, there’s a sterile, professional feel to the space. This is a serious place with a serious mission: to provide quality reproductive care to the community it serves.

Field Organizer Laura is proud of the new facility, which was specially renovated for Planned Parenthood’s needs.

“Having a fresh new space brings dignity to women’s health care,” Laura said of the new clinic.

On the night I visited, volunteers gathered to kick off a time of action for the 2012 campaign season. Twice weekly phone banks were scheduled, and sign up sheets were available. Short video clips were shown and words of encouragement provided for supporters of PP. The event was designed to ask folks to donate a precious commodity: time.    Read more

Jan Brewer Flips Off Arizona Uteruses – Bans Public Funding for Planned Parenthood

May 7, 2012 by pileofbabies

“No more free rides for uteruses in MY state!” cried Governor Brewer, as she signed off on a bill that would end most public funding to abortion providers, including Planned Parenthood. Citing her supporters, who do not wish to have their tax dollars support cancer screenings, vaccinations, and health education (editor's note: this should read “cancer screenings, vaccinations, health education, AND abortions. We apologize for the error), Governor Brewer called it a “common sense” law that “closes loopholes”.    Read more

President Obama and Mitt Romney Bare Down on Each Other for General Election

April 4, 2012 by fidlerten

It has been decided by those who understand the odds and knows what it will take to get the number of delegates to win the Republican nomination, that the more-than presumptive Republican candidate is former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. The rest of the candidates are just so much fodder and might as well hang up their campaign hats.    Read more

Planned Parenthood: Trying to Addict Your Kids to Sex [denialism blog]

February 16, 2012 by ScienceBlogs

How's this for a tinfoil hat conspiracy, brought to you by the American Life League--

Planned Parenthood's strategy in this great world is to:

Phase one: Get kids addicted to sex.
Phase two: profit! Through selling birth control, STD testing, and abortion.     Read more

Homeless Child to Pro-Lifers: Where are you now?

February 15, 2012 by fidlerten

I’m sure you meant well by trying to protect my life before I was born but what am I to do now? My mother didn’t want me and I’m hungry because I have no food. You said that you cared about me when I was in my mother’s womb but why am I so lonely and so hungry now? My mother says the government cut off our food stamps because those who claimed to love me demanded that they be cut, so that those who are wealthy could have another tax cut. What does that mean? I’m just a child and I don’t understand; if you wanted me to be born so badly, then why can’t I eat?

My mother and I had to move into a mission because she no longer could afford rent. There are other kids here too and they’re just like me; no place to live and no food to eat.

I hear that there are millions of people like you who fought to see that I was born but where are you now that I have no place to go?    Read more

Hiccuping Volcanoes

April 25, 2011 by Will Durst

You got to love The Right. Every single study and poll, every one, shows independents turned off by cultural-values wars; the same way chalk sidewalk drawings dissolve in a thunderstorm. And they try and they try and they try, but they just can't help themselves.    Read more
